In the context of increased caloric intake and decreased activity levels in Westernized societies, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes continues to climb. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 25.8 million persons in the United States (or 8.3% of the  population) have the disease, which is diagnosed in approximately 2 million persons each year.
