National Prevention Strategy Analysis

In June 2011, Regina Benjamin, Surgeon General of the United States, released the nation’s first-ever ‘‘National Prevention and Health Promotion Strategy: America’s Plan for Better Health and Wellness’’ (truncated as National Prevention Strategy, or Strategy).1 Dr. Benjamin proclaimed that the Strategy will ‘‘move us from a system of sick care to one based on wellness and prevention’’ in her cover letter introducing the Strategy.  This article analyzes this public policy direction, and likely outcomes.  The article first appeared in the American Journal of Health Promotion.
