The Health Enhancement Research Organization (HERO), a Birmingham, Alabama based non-profit corporation, maintains a multi-employer health risk and health cost database.  This database has been used to provide invaluable insights into the relationship between selected health risk factors and health care expenditures.  The first formal peer reviewed article using the database has become its most widely known publication and it is usually referred to as the “HERO study”.
